Hal Alper Elected Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers

Professor of chemical engineering recognized for pioneering contributions to biotechnology, metabolic and cellular engineering.

Hal Alper, Cockrell Family Regents Chair in Engineering #1 and professor of chemical engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, has been elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). AIChE’s highest honor, the peer-nominated distinction recognizes Alper for his pioneering approaches in the field of biotechnology. Specifically, his work merges the areas of synthetic biology, protein engineering and metabolic engineering and has profoundly impacted the field of industrial biotechnology.

Alper’s research focuses on the fields of metabolic engineering and synthetic biology where he harnesses the metabolism of cellular systems to produce sustainable, renewable biobased fuels, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. His work also uses these cellular systems in varied applications such as on-demand processing, engineered living materials, and space-based biotechnology. Among his many efforts, he has used computational and rational design to establish an approach termed “promoter engineering” for synthetic, hybrid promoter design for certain yeasts.

“In the area of synthetic biology, Hal has established techniques and methodologies to control gene expression in cells,” offered colleague Professor Nicholas Peppas, “these paradigms have led to the de novo design, creating entirely new molecular structures, of short, minimal synthetic parts, especially in fungal host systems.”

Alper received his B.S. from The University of Maryland, College Park, 2002, and Ph.D. from MIT, 2006, both in chemical engineering. He has authored more than 185 peer-reviewed publications, 12 book chapters, and ten non-peer reviewed publications that have garnered over 22,000 citations. His work has led to 10 issued US Patents.

Previous honors include election as Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2024), National Academy of Inventors Fellow (2019), the International Metabolic Engineering Award  (2025), the Andreas Acrivos Award for Professional Progress in Chemical Engineering, AIChE (2023), the AIChE Allan P. Colburn Award for Excellence in Publications by a Young Member of the Institute (2018), and the Young Investigator Award for the Society for Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology (2015).

He will be recognized at upcoming AIChE events, including the AIChE Annual Meeting in November.
